While nearly all the water at the Disneyland Resort is recycled, the Disneyland Resort partnered with Sloan to help reduce its water use, a collaboration that has advanced water conservation at the resort.

A Study in Water Conservation
A resort-wide water characterization study identified restrooms as a key area of opportunity. Partnering with Sloan, the Disneyland Resort studied the gallons per flush (gpf) rating on all of its restroom fixtures. During this process, inconsistent flow rates were discovered ranging from 3.5 gallons per flush (gpf) to 1.6 gpf. This was due to a combination of high flush-fixtures, misaligned components and component fatigue. This realization led to the strategic replacement of fixtures by eliminating high-flow models. In addition, the Disneyland Resort standardized flushometers to low- flow and right-sized diaphragms for optimal results. Sloan’s Royal Dual Filtered Diaphragms (1.6 gpf) resulted in a savings of millions of gallons of water.
The Quest for Additional Water Savings
Despite making significant strides toward reducing water consumption, the Disneyland Resort worked with Sloan to make additional improvements: further standardizing 1.6 gpf fixtures, testing and installing Sloan Royal 111 (1.28 gpf) diaphragms and installing .125 gpf flushometers on urinals. Given the type of foot traffic the Resort sees on a daily basis, the Disneyland Resort also collaborated with Sloan to better understand the lifecycle of its synthetic rubber diaphragms and standard maintenance schedule to ensure they were being replaced on a schedule. The Disneyland Resort didn’t want to stop its water conservation initiatives there. That’s why the resort installed Sloan’s ESS Sensor Flushometers with new sensor time settings to help eliminate false and premature flushes that were driving up water usage. By arming the new ESS flushometers to 16- seconds instead of the previous eight-second sensor flush, the Disneyland Resort achieved an additional water savings of up to 30 percent in restrooms.
