Water & Energy

At Sloan, water sustainability is one of our key missions. But water sustainability isn’t all about water—it’s about energy, too. Water and energy flow in a complex, constant loop, so when we use less water, we use less energy—and when we use less energy, we use less water.

Some facts about water and energy you may not know:

  • Drinking water and wastewater systems account for about 2% of United States energy use.
  • Transporting water by pipeline can require more than 7 times the energy of drawing it from a nearby source.
  • Electric generation plants and facilities use almost half of all of the water withdrawn in the U.S.
  • Solar power facilities actually require more water than natural gas, coal or nuclear plants.

Read on for a closer look at the facts and figures behind our interconnected, inter-dependent loop of water and energy.
